Volvo PV36 Carioca 1935 posters

Volvo PV36 Carioca

Visually unique and vastly different to any other Volvo car, the PV36 Carioca is an exciting chapter in Volvo's history. Only a few of this model were produced due to Volvo Car Corporation's small size. In 2010, the Volvo PV36 celebrated its 75th anniversary and it is important to note that its design was not a copy of the Chrysler Airflow, which is often falsely stated. The truth of the origin of the design remains a mystery. Chrysler's Airflow was released first in 1934, but Volvo's debut was less than a year later, making it highly unlikely that Volvo’s could have copied its styling. In today's world, a lead time of such a magnitude would be unheard of, even more so so 75 years ago. At the start of the 1930s, annual sales of Volvos were fewer than 1,000 cars with traditional design and construction – a six-cylinder engine, steel panels on a wooden body frame, exterior luggage racks, a vertical radiator and individual headlamps. Though style conventions were traditionally followed, Helmer MasOlle, the artist responsible for the car design, gave them a distinctive, elegant look.
