Volvo ReCharge Concept

Volvo Cars has unveiled the Volvo ReCharge Concept, a plug-in hybrid with two electric wheel motors and batteries that can be charged using a regular electrical outlet in order to maximise its environmental benefit. The battery capacity gives the car the potential to drive around 100 kilometres without needing the car's four-cylinder Flexifuel engine to power it and recharge the battery. At the Frankfurt Motor Show, a specially designed Volvo C30 was presented with the ReCharge Concept. Magnus Jonsson, Senior Vice President Research and Development at Volvo Cars, commented: “A certain proportion of electrical vehicles is essential if we are to achieve the future CO2 emission targets. The Volvo ReCharge Concept is a fascinating concept as it fuses a great electrical range with a backup engine.” The VMCC - the Volvo Car Corporation's think-tank based in Camarillo, California - is behind this revolutionary advancement in sustainable transportation. Magnus Jonsson stated “If you drive less than 100 kilometres a day, you rarely need to go to a fuel station. In the US, statistics show that this accounts for approximately 80 percent of drivers.” Not only is the Volvo ReCharge Concept beneficial to the environment, but it is ought to be a great relief to wallets. When running on electric-only power, it is estimated to have running costs that are 80 percent cheaper than a regular petrol-powered car. When the battery range ends and the engine kicks in, fuel consumption could range from 0 to 5.5 litres per 100 kilometres, dependent on the distance travelled.
