Volvo YCC Concept

The Volvo YCC ("Your Concept Car") was a concept car that aimed to meet the particular needs of female drivers. Back in the Fall of 2001, Volvo assembled a design team made up entirely of women to ensure that the car was designed ergonomically with females in mind. This team included Maria Widell Christiansen, Eva-Lisa Andersson, Elna Holmberg, Maria Uggla, Camilla Palmertz, Cynthia Charwick, Anna Rosén, Lena Ekelund and Tatiana Butovitsch Temm. At a glance, the car had the look of a mildly futuristic four-seater coupe. Upon further investigation, one would notice that the engine was only accessible by removing the entire front end of the body. To counter this inconvenience, the engine was designed to only need an oil change every 50,000 km (32,000 miles) and to send a notification to a garage before any maintenance is due. The process of filling the windshield washer reservoir was simplified with a capless ball valve located beside the capless gas tank valve. This was included as female drivers found the presence of caps to be a major annoyance in surveys. Moreover, the concept car featured run-flat tires - similar to those found in wheeled armoured vehicles - to allow for a safe drive to the garage after a puncture. Additionally, entry into the car was facilitated with two Gull-wing doors and an upwards opening hatchback door. All three doors were motorized and could be opened with a touch of a button on the keychain. Inside, the seating was maximized for storage and good looks. Removable textile panels and parts permitted customization through the changing of color schemes and textures. The head rests had indentations to fit in with ponytails. To further provide convenience, the shifting column and the hand brake were removed from the center console to make way for large storage compartments within the dashboard. The rear seat could fold up, ideating the jump seat of some planes and limousines to fit in bigger items. Finally, the Volvo YCC runs with a low-emission, gas-electric hybrid engine that is both powerful and environmentally friendly.
