The BMW 1 Series is a compact executive car that has been made by BMW since 2004, when it succeeded the BMW 3 Series Compact as the smallest and least expensive vehicle in BMW's lineup. The 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks were replaced in 2012 by the F20 and F21 models, while the E82 coupé and E88 convertible variants were replaced in 2013 by the 2 Series F22 and F23. It is sold as a 3-door hatchback (model code E81), 5-door hatchback (E87), coupe (E82) and 2-door convertible (E88), and features a rear-wheel drive chassis, 50:50 weight balance, longitudinally-mounted engine and aluminum multi-link suspension, plus petrol and diesel engines. In 2008, the 1 Series accounted for almost 20% of BMW's total sales. The 1 Series was designed by Christopher Chapman in 2001 and was presented in 2002 at the Geneva Motor Show in the form of the CS1 Concept. It was released worldwide in 2004 and shares several elements with the bigger E90 3 Series, including structural, chassis, powertrain, hardware and electronics. The 1 Series was produced to give BMW customers access to a smaller size at a more affordable price, as the 3 Series had become increasingly premium. In 2007, BMW released the three-door version of the 1 Series. Two years later, in 2007, the 1 Series Coupe (E82) was presented at the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) and went on sale on 24 November of that same year. The 1 Series coupe (E82) and convertible (E88) were made available to the US and Canada for the 2008 model year, as the 128i and the 135i, respectively, in June 2007. The other countries got the 120i and 125i variants in both body styles. The convertible features a soft-top roof instead of the 3 Series' folding hardtop.
