BMW 525i

The BMW E39 525i is a member of the E39 series of platform. This platform, which included the 1996 to 2004 BMW 5 Series, was the successor to the BMW E34. The basic model of the series is the BMW 520i, which carries a 112 kW engine capable of 150hp. It was later followed by the BMW E39 M5, with a 4.9 L V8 engine. The E39 series was first made available in the UK in 1995, then followed by the rest of Europe and other continents. Various engine sizes were produced, including USA models for the 528i, 540i and M5. The European range includes the 520, 523, 528, 530, 535, 540, 525tds, 520d, 525d, 530d and M5. All models were available in either a sedan or touring (estate/wagon) variant, with the exception of the M5 which was only available as a sedan. For the 2001 model year, BMW issued an update with clear-lens headlights featuring the "angel eyes" technology. Additionally, the rear lights were replaced with LED-based lights. It was also during this update that the 528i was replaced with the 225hp M54 3.0L engine, and a 184 hp BMW M54 2.5L engine was introduced with the 525i. The 540i also received a power boost, totalling 290hp. In 2002, E39s equipped with BMW Steptronic had their manual shift direction changed to match BMW's SMG cars, and the E39 model range sold in the USA consisted of the 525i, 530i, 540i and M5. Also, there were no external difference between the 2001 and 2002 model years. The 2003 model year is the last year for the E39 sedans, distinguished by extra chrome trim installed to the trunk and the body's sides. The E39 wagon (touring/estate) was continued into the 2004 model year, until the release of the E60 5 Series touring model. The engine and transmission choices remained unchanged for the 2002, 2003 and 2004 models.
