BMW M3 Cabriolet

The BMW M3 Cabriolet was born out of a dream that began in August 1985. Since that summer, anticipation for the fastest 3 Series BMW of all time was built up by German automobile magazines, which revealed the car's impressive stats. It boasted 200 horsepower, a top speed of over 230 km/h and a 0-100 rate in just 6.7 seconds - prompting the prediction that "the most dynamic BMW 3 Series drivers" would have to wait until mid-1986. However, this prediction about needing a turbocharged engine to be part of the 'A Team' was proven wrong. The M3 project was launched a few months after BMW CEO Eberhard Kuenheim commissioned the design for its successor from Motorsport GmbH. According to legend, Kuenheim stated on one of his regular visits to Munich's Preußenstraße that they needed a sporty engine for the 3 Series. For the renowned motorsport team, taking on the project was a no-brainer. They had already demonstrated their prowess with M-engine-equipped 5 Series saloons and had experience developing Formula 1 turbo engines, such as the one which helped Nelson Piquet win the World Championship in the Brabham BMW in 1983.
