The BMW Z1 was an iconic two-seater roadster produced by BMW from 1987 to 1991. Best known for its retractable doors, which slide into the body instead of opening outward, this car made an impression since its introduction at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1987 when BMW received over 5,000 orders. Making it all the more noteworthy were the plastic body panels that could be changed by the car's owner in only 40 minutes, allowing them to customize the car's color.
The BMW Z1 was powered by a 2.5-liter 6000-series inline-6 engine which generated 170 PS (168 hp/125 kW) at 5800 rpm and 222 Nm (164 ft·lb) of torque at 4300rpm. It was paired with a 5-speed manual rear wheel drive transmission and had a top speed of 220 km/h (137 mph) and a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of 9 seconds.
Unfortunately, low demand caused its discontinuation in 1991 with approximately 8,000 units produced, most of which were delivered to clients in Germany.
