Cadillac Sixteen Concept

The Cadillac Sixteen was a prototype of a luxurious and powerful automobile initially unveiled by Cadillac in 2003. Fitted with a 32-valve V-16 engine displacing 13.6 liters, the car was equipped with a four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission and Displacement on Demand technology. This feature, released in some 2005 GM models, deactivates half of the cylinders during normal operating conditions and reactivates them as needed for added power demands. The engine was claimed to make 1000 hp (750 kW) and 1000 ft·lbf (1350 N·m) without forced induction. The concept was inspired by the Cadillac V-16 from the 1930s, but featured both contemporary "Art and Science" design elements as well as design touches from the 1967 Cadillac Eldorado. Additional original design elements were included via an internal design competition led by GM Vice President Robert Lutz. Other notable features included a steering wheel logo made of solid crystal and a Bulgari clock on the dashboard. Although the Sixteen failed to receive production approval, the car had a lasting effect on Cadillac's product planning. Future models are anticipated to take features from the Sixteen's design, including styling cues and the option of a V8 or V12 engine for the range-topping ULS (ultra luxury sedan). This model is supposed to go head-to-head with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7-Series and is slated to launch in 2009.
