Honda Accord SE

The sixth generation of Honda Accord was split into three distinct models for the Japanese, North American and European markets. This generation also brought the release of performance versions for both European and Japanese markets, called the Type R and Euro R respectively. While the Accord wagon was discontinued in North American markets, the coupe was no longer available in Japan.

Japan

The Japanese models, released on September 4th, 1997, were built skinnier than the previously released generation, returning them to the categorization of compact cars, with the exception of the Euro R and wagon, which were classified as mid-sized. The Honda Torneo, nearly identical but with its own distinct branding, replaced the Honda Ascot and Honda Rafaga in Japan. Honda Clio locations kept the Accord until this generation gave way to the brand new Honda Inspire, which was sold at both Honda Verno and Honda Primo. This was the last Accord to be sold as Isuzu Aska.

As the previous generation of Accord underwent an exterior size increase, this model of Honda was reclassified as a midsized car. The Honda Inspire was built in two separate platforms, the smaller G20A five-cylinder engine in a more compacted sedan design, fitting the “compact” regulations in Japan. This was Honda’s effort to position Honda Clio as a luxurious car dealership, now with the addition of the luxury sedans Honda Legend and Honda Inspire. The Accord station wagon continued to be sold in Japan. All trim levels available in Japan came with the then newly introduced Internavi, a telematics service connectivity with internet.
