Honda Civic Sedan

In 1987, Honda made a significant redesign for the Civic model in 1988. This included a double-wishbone suspension on all four corners, a larger wheelbase of 98.4 inches (250 cm), and a newly designed body with a lower hood line and more glass to reduce drag. Although advertised as double-wishbone suspension, the rear suspension is actually a multi-link trailing arm suspension with a single control arm and toe control.

Japan

The base model of the fourth generation Civic had a worldwide 1.2 L SOHC engine, except for the Japanese and American markets which had a 1.3 L SOHC single carbureted engine. There was also a range of 1.5 L SOHC engines available, dual-point injection, single carbureted, and dual carbureted, which was used for the 25X and 25XT models. For the sporty Si version, Honda featured a (ZC) D16A8/A9 1.6 L 16V DOHC VTEC engine, with a maximum output of 160 PS (118 kW; 158 hp). This was the first time Honda used their VTEC technology for variable valve timing and electronic lift control. Other European countries offered a less powerful B16A1 engine, with an 8,200 rpm redline and 150 hp (112 kW). Automatic-equipped SiR Civics in Japan also received this lower-powered engine.
