The company was created in 1989 as McLaren Cars by Ron Dennis. However, the history of the brand started in 1960s, when Bruce McLaren decided to build the quickest accelerating car in the world and created a couple of prototypes.
Sports car McLaren F1 was the first car of the brand, released in 1992. From 1994 to 2005, it maintained the status of the quickest production car. In 1993, McLaren Advanced Vehicles was formed in order to create a supersonic car. However, the project was shelved. In 1998, McLaren Mercedes MP4/98T, designed by Gordon Murray, became the first tandem car for Formula 1. In a year, one more car, Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, was produced in cooperation with Mercedes.
McLaren Cars was a subsidiary of McLaren Group. A new company, McLaren Automative, is owned by three owners of the McLaren Group and Peter Lim. At the moment, the company has two divisions: McLaren Special Operations (makes customized cars) and McLaren GT (deals with design, development and production).
