Mercedes-Benz CLK55 Cabriolet AMG
The Mercedes-Benz W209 cars have been on the market since 2002. They are sold under the CLK (Coupe-Luxury-Klasse) model names. The W209 draws its roots from the W203 C-Class. After the 2004 year, the first C208 CLK-Class comes off the assembly line and spectrum the era of the CLK moniker.
The W209 is available in both coupe and cabriolet body styles with three different engine options: a V6 (CLK320 in '04, CLK350 afterwards), a V8 (CLK500), and a supercharged V8 (CLK55). The cabriolet (respectively denoted with an A, like in the CLK500A) features an entirely automated retractable roof that can be opened and closed using a key fob remote.
Market position and competitors
The CLK is designed to fill the mid-luxury market for coupes and convertibles. It has the distinction of being the only 4-seat convertible from Mercedes-Benz. Its most direct competitors within the cabriolet market are the Volvo C70 and Lexus SC430, although it can be equipped with more powerful engine options than these two. The CLK is set up right in the middle between the BMW 3 Series coupe/cabriolet and the 6 Series coupe/cabriolet in terms of pricing and specifications.
Characteristics
The CLK is a top-of-the-line vehicle that offers exceptional handling even in the most extreme conditions. Its performance is on par with some of the fastest sports cars on the market. In addition, power for the CLK350 and CLK500 models have an electronically limited top speed of 135mph, while the CLK55 model takes it up to 155mph. Unlike many other cars, it doesn't have an artificial fuel cutoff, but rather a point where the car simply can't go any faster.
The ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and ABS (Antilock Breaking System) are wonderful features that aid handling performance, tracking, and ground traction. Thanks to the ESP, it is possible to make a 90-degree turn on a two lane intersection from 50mph speed with breaking and turning. As of now, the ESP system does not allow drifting as it has to be disabled with a special factory protocol that does not apply to end-users.
