Smart Roadster Coupe 2003 posters

Smart Roadster Coupe

The Smart Roadster Coupe was a two-door microcar first introduced in 2003 by Smart GmbH. Although initial reactions were favorable, sales of the Roadster and Roadster Coupé were ultimately far below expectations, leading to their discontinuation in November 2005. History The development of the Roadster stemmed from the original Smart City Coupe, introduced at the 1998 Paris Motor Show. It was considered one of the more radical vehicle concepts to hit the European market since the bubble cars of the 1950s. However, due to its stability issues, as well as Smart's elitist marketing and the car's unique design, Smart needed to make numerous alterations and revise its production projections. Design & Development Smart's 14-person design and engineering team started sketching plans for a potential future car model, making use of the City Coupe's powertrain and a compact turbo engine driving the rear wheels via a sequential 6 speed gearbox. This served as the groundwork for their development of the Smart Roadster.
