Smart logo consists of a “c” letter that stands for “compact” and an arrow, representing the company’s “forward thinking”. You can see it on any company’s advertisement or poster.
A joint venture of Daimler-Benz and Swatch, Micro Compact Car AG, which started in 1972, aimed at the creation of small and economical city car Smart. The first Smart model was presented in 1997 and in a year, it was introduced to the European market. In 1998, Swatch Group sold its shares to Daimler-Benz AG, which became the single owner of the brand. In 1999, Smart introduced its first cabriolet.
In 2000, Smart cars became the first ones in the world, which were equipped with Internet connection. In 2002, the company changed its name to Smart GmbH.
In the beginning, Smarts were created as Fortwo cars with only two seats available. In 2004, Forfour model was presented. In 2006, Smart started to develop electric models and in 2009, presented the first one. The car was equipped a lithium-ion battery, provided by Tesla Motors, which was able to drive 135 kilometers without charging. In 2013, Daimler announced that it planned to start the mass production of electric Smarts in order to be able to offer them in 30 markets in the world. At the moment, Smart cars are created at the Mercedes-Benz Cars division of Daimler AG.
