The company was founded in 1957 in Caterham, Surrey. Since its creation to 1973, it was one of the main dealers of Lotus Cars. In 1967, it became an exclusive distributor of Lotus Seven. In 1973, it was granted all the rights for Lotus Seven and became the only legal successor of the model, the construction of which is constantly improved.
The first car of the company was Caterham 7, which was the exact copy of the Series 3 Lotus Seven. It’s often called one of the most iconic cars of the 20th century.
In 1994, Caterham 21, a two-seat roadster, was introduced. Though it had much in common with Caterham 7, it was intended to be more practical. However, having released 48 cars, the company stopped the production.
In 2011, the company was bought by Tony Fernandes, an owner of Team F1 Lotus, and later became a part of the Caterham Group. Since 2012, Team Lotus changed its name to Caterham F1 Team.
