The first company’s logo was based on the Malaysian flag and coat of arms. It was a blue shield with a yellow crescent and a fourteen-pointed star. In 2000, a new logo was presented. It was a stylized image of a yellow tiger in a green circle, located in the middle of a blue shield. The brand name was written in yellow above the circle. At the moment, the logo remains almost the same, but is in silver and black colors.
The company was established in 1983. The production of the cars started in 1985, when Mitsubishi Motors provided a license for Proton Saga, based on Mitsubishi Lancer. For the first 10 years, the company built its cars, based on Mitsubishi models. In 1996, Proton bought 80% stake in Lotus Cars. The engineering division of Lotus started to develop cars for the production on the Malaysian plants and, as a result, Proton Waja, the first original car of the brand, was introduced in 2000.
In 2002, Proton Jumbuck model was produced and became rather popular abroad. The Proton Gen-2, released in 2004, became the first Proton car, equipped with the Malaysian-made Campro engine. In 2008, the second generation of Proton Saga started to be produced. Soon, it was called the most successful car of the marque.
In 2008, Proton renewed its cooperation with Mitsubishi and developed its Proton Inspira on the 2007 Mitsubishi Lancer basis. In 2012, the Proton Preve was presented. It became the first Proton and the first Malaysian car to be awarded with 5-star safety rating in the ANCAP of Australia and New Zealand. Suprima S, launched in 2013, became the second car of the brand, which got the 5-star ANCAP rating.
