SEAT was founded in 1950 by the Instituto Nacional de Industria. Since the first days of its creation, the brand cooperated with Italian carmaker Fiat. In the beginning, SEAT had to produce rebadged or modified models of Fiat. In 1953, the first car of the marquee, SEAT 1400, was released. In 1957, legendary SEAT 600 was introduced. It became the symbol of the Spanish Miracle and was a car, which could be afforded by many Spanish families. SEAT 800 was the first car, which had no equivalent in Fiat. In 1975, SEAT 1200 Sport became the first car of the brand, which was developed without the help of Fiat.
The cooperation with Fiat lasted till 1980. In 1982, SEAT started to collaborate with the Volkswagen Group. Since 2001, SEAT is a subsidiary of the German company. In two years, SEAT not only brought profit to Volkswagen but also provided a low-cost manufacturing outlet for other brands of the Volkswagen Group. In 2002-2007, SEAT was a part of Audi Brand Group, another subsidiary of the VW.
Today, SEAT is the only carmaker in Spain, which is able to develop its cars in-house. It sells cars to more than 70 countries worldwide, though its cars are primarily bought by Europeans. An interesting fact is that the majority of the titles for SEAT cars are taken from the places in Spain.
