Volvo logo is the ancient chemical symbol for iron — a circle with an arrow pointing diagonally upwards to the right. It’s also the symbol of Mars, a god of war, and the masculine gender. The rectangle with the company’s name on it is located in front of the circle.
The company was founded in 1927 as a subsidiary of SKF company by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustav Larson. However, the trademark “Volvo” was first introduced in 1915. In 1927, the first car of the company, Volvo OV 4, was released. In 1935, Volvo became an independent company. In 1976, Volvo 340 was presented and soon became one of the bestselling cars in UK.
In 1999, Volvo Personvagnar was sold to Ford. Since then, Volvo Cars and Volvo Group are two separate companies, which share the same trademark. In 2010, Geely Automobile bought the brand.
Throughout its history, Volvo has always been the leader in safety engineering. Volvo cars were the first ones to use three-point safety belts, rear-facing child seats and side airbags.
At the moment, the brand produces sports cars, station wagons, sedans and coupes. It also deals with alternate fuel vehicles. In 2005, its first flexifuel model, E85, was produced. In 2007, the brand presented the Volvo ReCharge, its first hybrid. In 2010, the company showed electric concept car Volvo C30 DRIVe at the Paris Motor Show.
