The brand name is a compound word from “mitsu” (“three”) and “hishi” (“diamond or rhombus”). Mitsubishi logo consists of three red rhombuses, also referred as three diamonds, which represent the brand’s reliability, integrity and success.
The Mitsubishi company was founded in 1870 by Yataro Iwasaki as a shipping organization. Gradually, Iwasaki expanded his business. At the moment, it consists of three main entities: Mitsubishi Bank, Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which is divided into smaller units, including the Mitsubishi Motors.
In 1917, Mitsubishi Model A, the first car of the brand and the first series automobile in Japan, was introduced. Under the Fuso name, Mitsubishi produced trucks and buses in 1920-1930s. In 1937, PX33, a military sedan, was developed. In 1960s, Galant and Colt line cars started to be produced. Later, Lancer, Pajero and Delica joined them.
Throughout its history, Mitsubishi formed alliances with different foreign companies. The most well-known ones were with Chrysler from 1971 to 1993 and DaimlerChysler in 2000-2005. In 1970s, Chrysler sold Galant in the United States as Dodge Colt. In 1982, Mitsubishi appeared in the American market separately.
The cars of the brand also take part in various races. It’s considered to be the most successful carmaker in the history of the Dakar Rally as its cars managed to win in 1992, 1993, 1997, 1998, and between 2001 and 2007.
In 2011, the brand was called the sixth biggest Japanese carmaker and the sixteenth largest in the world by production.
An interesting fact is that Mitsubishi has a 30 years contract with actor and director Jackie Chan, who uses their cars in his movies. Moreover, at the Jackie Chan Cup celebrities together with professional drivers take part in a race in Mitsubishi vehicles.
